POLISH CHAMBER CHOIR

The Polish Chamber Choir Schola Cantorum Gedanensis is an outstanding, professional choir with a unique timbre, the highest technical skills and an unusually wide repertoire. The choir's fame, which reaches aesthetic heights, has reached not only the most important concert halls in Poland, but also many significant music centers in Europe, North America and Asia. The Polish Chamber Choir Schola Cantorum Gedanensis was founded in 1978 on the initiative of Ireneusz Łukaszewski, who was its first artistic director. In 1983, the artistic direction of the ensemble was taken over by the founder's brother, Jan Łukaszewski.

The ensemble performs works of various forms and styles: from a cappella music to large oratorios, operas and symphonies, from renaissance, baroque and classical music to romantic and contemporary pieces. The group has premiered nearly 700 works, including works by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Wojciech Kilar and Krzysztof Penderecki. They dedicated their works to the choir, e.g. Wojciech Kilar, Augustyn Bloch, Krzysztof Meyer, Edward Pałłasz, Juliusz Łuciuk, Andrzej Koszewski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Paweł Łukaszewski, as well as foreign composers. The artists who entrusted the ensemble with their works unanimously confirm its highest vocal artistry: balanced voices, intonation perfection, the ability to precisely articulate verbal texts and musical texts, as well as the ability to read the deepest composer's intentions.

For years, the ensemble has enjoyed the reputation of a versatile choir with a unique timbre of voices, which has opened the ensemble to cooperation with such excellent orchestras as: Sinfonia Varsovia, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music, Divino Sospiro, Neue Düsseldorfer Hofmusik, Concilium Musicum Wien, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Venice Baroque Orchestra and with such outstanding choral conductors as: Eric Ericson, Uwe Gronostay and Stephen Layton. The choir's control over even the most complex sound matter means that the ensemble has been and is invited to such prestigious music festivals as Warsaw Autumn, Wratislavia Cantans, Soundstreams, Music in Old Krakow, Poznań Music Spring, Gaude Mater International Festival of Sacred Music, Bydgoszcz Music Festival or Warsaw Music Meetings. The band has performed on three continents: from Japan, through Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain, to the United States of America and Canada. In 2013, the Polish Chamber Choir, conducted by Jan Łukaszewski, accompanied by the Swiss instrumental ensemble Musica Fiorita, made the first recording of 55 surviving motets by the Gdańsk composer Andrzej Hakenberger (1574–1627). A double album with these recordings was released in 2018 by Naxos. The Polish Chamber Choir Schola Cantorum Gedanensis is a cultural institution of the City of Gdańsk.
