Tomasz Chyła Quintet

The Tomasz Chyła Quintet is one of the most intriguing young generation ensembles of Polish jazz. For several years, they have been exploring improvised music without constraints, drawing influences from other musical genres. From these experiments, they have so far produced four albums: Eternal Entropy (2017), Circlesongs (2018), Tomasz Chyła Quintet live at Polish Radio 3 (2019), and da Vinci (2020). In 2019, the group received a nomination from the Phonographic Academy for the Fryderyki 2019 Music Award in the Jazz Music category, with a nomination for Album of the Year for the album Circlesongs. Tomasz Chyła, the band's leader, was nominated as Artist of the Year in the Jazz category. This marked the group's second nomination. They received their first two years earlier in the Jazz category, for Phonographic Debut of the Year with the album Eternal Entropy. The title of the quintet's third studio album alludes to the Renaissance painter, architect, mathematician, and... musician. The album is a fusion of various performance and compositional techniques. The catalyst for the album's creation is the figure of Leonardo da Vinci – a genius and legend, known for his fascination with humanity, the world, and an unrestrained and untamed curiosity, underpinned by a relentless pursuit of perfection. As a scholar and a person of countless talents, he serves on one hand as an inspiration and on the other, a challenge. Based on these premises, the album is centered on his persona as the primary and titular inspiration. In this collection, the band presents a range of diverse musical concepts, offering impressions of how a multifaceted mind might function, combining choral music, jazz, rock, and so-called contemporary music.
